Star Wars Battle Front

It's been just over two years since this title came out and by now we can truly look at the successes and failures that are present in Star Wars Battlefront. Back in 2005 "Star Wars: Battlefront II" was released and grew to be a well-loved star wars game, which in the past has been rare. Ten years later EA (Electronic Arts) and DICE (Digital Illusions CE) put out a new Battlefront game with a new engine, a new console, and a new experience entirely.

I never actually played this game on release or during the beta and was very late on actually sitting down with this game and giving it any playtime. Its become so common for modern games to be disasters upon release. This could be caused by rushed due dates, short open betas, and a lack of pre-release testing. However usually by Christmas, the game has its original problems worked out and it no longer is going through bug fixes and its all about refining the experience of the game.

Aight enough excuses about why I am doing a review about two-year-old game lets talk about "Star Wars Battlefront".

My first impression the game gave me was how beautiful it is. Whether you're on the volcanic battlefield of Sulust or the desolate wasteland of Jakku you'll see that the frostbite engine really is a work of art and can create a stunning landscape and visual experience. The graphics and effects are fantastically done to immerse you in the game. The sound is also just so iconic. From the blaster sounds to the occasional "Willhelm Scream" you don't necessarily have to see the gameplay to know it's a Star Wars game. Overall the graphics, environments, soundtrack, and dialogue create a sense of immersion and you feel like you are truly a part of the Star Wars universe.

Even though the game is gorgeous and immersive that's only part of it, the gameplay, however, has some lacking points. Just Like the previous Battlefront games, this game has the rare ability to play in either first or third person. The gameplay is far different from the previous games in the series however because of the new weapons, combat style, and new game modes. Overall my first week of playing the game was very engaging and overall captivating. However, after week two onward the game became repetitive and grew more and more predictable. I gotta speak about the ammount of grenade spam and explosive spam that is used in this game and it really becomes annoying when 7/10 times you die is due to explosions. I found the heroes were woefully unbalanced and I still don't know if that was intentional aspect of the game or not. The developers could have made them so powerful in the game to emphasize their strength in the universe or make the payout of being a hero so rewarding.

Just like any EA game, there are plenty of opportunities for the use of microtransactions to create a leg up in the game. I could release a whole article about my hate for microtransactions, however, I know there are plenty of other bloggers who share my views and probably could write an article much better than me. But in a sense, it just gives the players who are willing to spend more money a leg up in the game through quicker access to items and abilities in the game. Playing this game 2 years after the release I never actually felt any of this because most people by now have either stopped playing or have unlocked everything they want already.

It's pretty common for me to hate flying in video games. It's not caused by a fear of heights or a distaste for commercial aircraft pilots. I just never fully learned how to fly in games with realistic or complicated flight controls and would always be embarrassed by my inability to fly so I would always have one of my other friends do it if it was a multiplayer game. However, I quite enjoy the flying system in this game and while playing Fighter Squadron I couldn't help but nerd out. I really felt like I could be a famous X wing pilot like Poe or Luke. Like I said this game is so Immersive and I really felt like I should binge the entire Star Wars series in one night and fucking get the rebel symbol as a tattoo.

Overall the game has some really great features in the gameplay that I would love to see in the upcoming release of "Star Wars Battlefront 2", not to be confused by "Star Wars: Battlefront 2" obviously. But the gameplay has very little replayability and doesn't hold up after more than 24 hours of playtime unless you really dedicate yourself to it. But this game is really beautiful and yeah I'm gonna say it again Immersive because it can suck you out of whatever you're doing and throw you onto the battle for the galaxy. I used to love star wars as a kid and am enjoying the new movies so far and this game really rekindled my fire for the old movies. If you are a star wars fan looking for a star wars game but can necessarily buy the newly released title I do recommend this game for its unique gameplay features, scenery, and overall star wars feel to it.
