Call of Duty Ghosts

To me, Call of Duty Ghosts marked the start of an era of bad Call of Duty Games that has plagued the franchise for years. This game wasn't necessarily poorly developed but it was just so uninteresting and its hard to hide all the flaws in the game when there are so many underhwelming parts of the game.

Its predecessor Black Ops 2 was a resounding success for fans, and its popularity continued for several years after its release. However, Call of Duty Ghosts flopped fast. The overall player count tanked in the next few years and there are about 500 players still playing the game. However, its predecessor to this day has over 2,000 players playing as of recently. (statistics from steamcharts.com)

Nobody should play a Call of Duty for its campaign. Even some of the most popular titles in the series still had awful campaigns. Call of Duty has always been known for its cliche over the top violence which has come to define the series. Though this action can be cool to the average 12-year-old it doesn't compel older gamers and anyone actually 17+. The story is boring and the characters are absolutely forgettable. The missions where the players are fighting in outer space were overhyped and it wasn't as game-changing or different as any of the players hoped for. The overall gameplay stuck to the same system and didn't seem overly broken or flawed it just seemed forgettable.

The multiplayer portion of the game is very similar in the fact that it had no gameplay mechanics or components that stood out. The gameplay stayed true to the roots of Call of Duty with fast-paced over the top action. Ghosts also stayed true to past games with uninteresting and overly brown maps, connection biased encounters where people with better internet come out on top, and also imbalanced weapons. There was no life or substance in this multiplayer game and it just felt like it highlighted all that frustrated players in the series

Extinction was the final nail in the coffin for this game. This mode was a survival game type where you have to fight and escape from alien-like creatures while discovering new weapons and ways to survive. This was an obvious attempt to recreate the popular Zombies Mode from previous games. Credit has to be given to Infinity Ward because this mode is completely new to the series and stands out. However, the execution of this game mode was not as successful as Zombies was. They only ever released 5 "episodes" or maps for Extinction and several of these had to be purchased with the DLC. Black Ops 2 had 4 maps that are playable in the base game and 3 different zombie related game types. Ghosts predecessor also had another 7 maps for DLC so there are over 11 different maps with plenty of new stories and game modes. Overall the gameplay and story of this game mode were different and new but the replayability was lacking. Extinction was trying too hard to be like Zombies they should have just made a new Zombies game type. Or maybe not, because even Treyarch, the original creators of Call of Duty Zombies, has been unsuccessful as to create a proper remake in their recent games.

Call of Duty Ghosts as a whole was very unremarkable and even the parts that were new to the franchise had very little components to keep players coming back for more. The campaign was overall flat and too cliche. Extinction was brand new but overall had nothing to compel players to keep playing. Finally, a very biased, unbalanced, and boring multiplayer brings it together. Call of Duty Ghosts was a start to a horrible era for this franchise.

Battlefield 4

There have been 11 battlefield games released since 2002 and until Battlefield 4 the series was under the shadow of the Call of Duty series. A large part of the gaming landscape of 2013 was the end of Black Ops II and the new Call of Duty Ghosts. However, Ghosts was a disaster on the franchise and Ill release a review telling exactly why eventually. Because of this other titles and franchises were able to take the stage. That's how I found Battlefield 4 and since the open beta, I still see this game as my favorite military shooter. Battlefield 4, to me, is the magnum opus of DICE and EA. The fabulous graphics of the Frostbite engine were so good that to this day, its the only video game engine I know by name. The explosions are beautiful, and the different landscapes and colors of this game are enthralling. The sounds and visual effects such as lens flare, and textures in 2013 made the experience absolutely. Even 4 years later the graphics are still comparable. The...

Star Wars Battle Front

It's been just over two years since this title came out and by now we can truly look at the successes and failures that are present in Star Wars Battlefront. Back in 2005 "Star Wars: Battlefront II" was released and grew to be a well-loved star wars game, which in the past has been rare. Ten years later EA (Electronic Arts) and DICE (Digital Illusions CE) put out a new Battlefront game with a new engine, a new console, and a new experience entirely. I never actually played this game on release or during the beta and was very late on actually sitting down with this game and giving it any playtime. Its become so common for modern games to be disasters upon release. This could be caused by rushed due dates, short open betas, and a lack of pre-release testing. However usually by Christmas, the game has its original problems worked out and it no longer is going through bug fixes and its all about refining the experience of the game. Aight enough excuses about why I am doin...

Steep

I've never been much of a winter sports guy. However, I quite enjoyed playing Steep for most of this past year. In my opinion, it makes a sports game just a bit better when it has a bit of absurdity to it. The fact that you can become half deer half man and shred down the mountain at insane speed hooks me right into this game. This game is perfect for a laid back gaming session with a few friends. Steep isn't the first over the top snowboarding game but its the only one to have more than just snowboarding. So maybe it's not just a snowboarding game... however you have to see comparisons between Steep and other series, like SSX, that take it to another level of insanity. Maybe that's just extreme winter sports culture? You can do crazy stunts in so many other different types of sports like wingsuit, bobsledding, and parachuting. I found that the ground sports like skiing and snowboarding were my favorites and found the wingsuit a bit overwhelming and the parachuting wa...
