I've never been much of a winter sports guy. However, I quite enjoyed playing Steep for most of this past year. In my opinion, it makes a sports game just a bit better when it has a bit of absurdity to it. The fact that you can become half deer half man and shred down the mountain at insane speed hooks me right into this game. This game is perfect for a laid back gaming session with a few friends.
Steep isn't the first over the top snowboarding game but its the only one to have more than just snowboarding. So maybe it's not just a snowboarding game... however you have to see comparisons between Steep and other series, like SSX, that take it to another level of insanity. Maybe that's just extreme winter sports culture? You can do crazy stunts in so many other different types of sports like wingsuit, bobsledding, and parachuting. I found that the ground sports like skiing and snowboarding were my favorites and found the wingsuit a bit overwhelming and the parachuting was super awkward.
You can find your own way of playing Steep whether you want to be an Explorer and travel all around the mountain, a Pro Rider and compete in fast-paced races, Free Rider for the people who just want to travel all terrain, Extreme Rider is for people who like to live on the edge and crash into a lot of trees and rocks, Freestyler for those who want to do absurdly wicked stunts, and Bone Collector for the people who fail at those absurdly wicked stunts. As you progress through the game whichever one of these categories you spend the most time in you will be part of that group.
I have yet to play the new expansion but I can say that the Alaska map was a great refreshing addition to the game and also the DLC packs also added new courses, suits, sports, and plenty of great cool features with this game.
In all honesty, the biggest thing I love about this game and games like it is its self-awareness about how crazy and over the top it is. "If we're gonna make someone do a 720 Backflip and possibly land it we might as well give them the opportunity of doing it as a Yeti". I think in the past Ubisoft games have taken themselves too serious *cough cough* Watchdogs *cough cough*. Steep is different though cause they throw whatever realism out the window and hand you an absurd game. I loved Steep and can recommend it to any casual gamer willing to give a snowboarding game a try. It's a lot better with friends also.
